Psychoeducational Assessment
Psychoeducational assessments are comprehensive evaluations that focus on an individual’s cognitive functioning, academic skills, and learning processes. These assessments help clarify strengths, identify areas of challenge, and provide practical recommendations for support and accommodations in school, post-secondary, and work settings.
Psychoeducational assessments are commonly used to identify learning disabilities (e.g., reading, writing, math), giftedness, and learning profiles that may be impacting performance, confidence, and day-to-day functioning.
Who This Is For
Psychoeducational assessments may be helpful for children, adolescents, and adults who are experiencing persistent academic or learning-related challenges, uneven performance, or difficulty meeting the demands of school or post-secondary programs.
These assessments are also helpful for individuals who require clear documentation and recommendations to support academic accommodations or learning supports.
Learning Disability and Giftedness
This page covers psychoeducational assessment, including focused pathways for learning disability assessment and giftedness assessment. If you are unsure which pathway best fits your needs, we can clarify this during the initial apppointment.
Looking for ADHD or Autism Assessment?
If your primary question is ADHD or autism, we offer dedicated assessment pathways with adult and child/adolescent options.
If your main concern involves learning, academic achievement, school performance, or accommodations, a psychoeducational assessment is often the best fit.
Our Process
The psychoeducational assessment process is collaborative and structured. In child and adolescent assessments, parent involvement is important, and school input may be included when helpful and available.
The goal is to provide clarity, reduce uncertainty, and deliver a set of practical recommendations that can be implemented in real life.
During a psychoeducational assessment, you will be guided through standardized testing and evidence-based measures that assess different areas of learning and cognitive functioning. Some questions are answered in a yes/no format, while others require more detailed responses.
The clinician will support you throughout the process and will ensure you understand what is being assessed and why.
Following the completion of the assessment, a report will be written based on the information gathered throughout the process (and, when applicable, from collateral sources such as parent/teacher input). Once the report is complete, you will be invited to a feedback session, where you will have an opportunity to review the report and share any additional information or ask any questions you feel may be relevant.
In order to complete a psychoeducational assessment, you may be self-referred or referred by a physician or other healthcare professional.
What to Expect
Learning Disability Assessment
A learning disability assessment is appropriate when there are persistent difficulties in reading, writing, or math that are not explained by effort alone. These challenges often show up as slow or effortful learning, inconsistent performance, avoidance of schoolwork, or increasing anxiety and low confidence around academics.
The goal is to identify the specific learning profile, clarify why challenges are happening, and provide clear recommendations for effective supports and accommodations.
Giftedness Assessment
Giftedness assessments can help identify advanced cognitive abilities and clarify learning needs, especially when a child or adolescent is not thriving in a typical classroom environment despite strong potential.
In some cases, an assessment can also help clarify “twice-exceptional” profiles (giftedness alongside learning or attention challenges), which can present as uneven performance, frustration, perfectionism, or inconsistent academic output.
